The Amar Quartet was an important string quartet of classical modernism, founded in Frankfurt in 1925 by composer and violist Paul Hindemith and the first violinist Licco Amar. The ensemble was particularly committed to contemporary music and premiered numerous works of the modern era. Due to political pressure under the Nazi regime, the ensemble emigrated to Switzerland in 1929.
Since Hindemith’s 100th birthday in 1995, the current quartet, led by Anna Brunner, has had the honor of carrying the name Amar. The ensemble is deeply committed to Hindemith’s works and has recorded all seven of his string quartets for Naxos—the first two CDs were awarded the Diapason d’Or in 2012.
