Ben Hancox-Lachman

Ben is establishing himself as a tenor in London and the Southeast, performing oratorio, song and opera. Alongside his singing career, he is studying for a PhD at Imperial College London with Bill Rutherford, focussing on the structure and function of photosynthetic proteins.

Growing up in a family with two working musicians, Ben has performed regularly since childhood. He was an honorary music scholar at Sevenoaks school and was a prize winner in the 2017 Junior Association of English Singers and Speakers Competition.

Since embarking on a freelance career, he has performed many oratorio works including the title role in Handel’s Samson, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and Bach’s Christmas oratorio.

Ben has a wealth of experience on stage, playing the lead role in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, and more recently as Don Curzio/Basilio in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, and Marco in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers.

Additionally, he has performed an extensive repertoire in recital, with a range of styles and composers from Schumann to Messiaen, and in 2025 premiered John Hawkins’ song cycle Both Beauties.

He has participated in multiple recordings, including as a boy treble, in a live studio recording with Shelley Katz, and more recently Love, Friendship and Longing, a setting of Tang Dynasty poems by Nicholas Michael Smith.

Future engagements include Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with orchestra, the evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion, Lucas in Haydn’s Seasons, and a project in collaboration with The Symphonova bringing to light music from suppressed composers.
