Passionate about music from an early age, Olivier Maurel discovered percussion through the Beatles’ pop and the powerful and tortured writing of Yoshihisa Taïra. After studying the violin, he trained at the conservatories of Rennes, St Malo and Strasbourg and obtained the Prix Supérieur Inter-régional after a classical course. He is also introduced to the Martenot waves. On the sidelines of his classical studies, he remains curious about all musical universes. From Stockhausen to Radiohead, from hardtech to cumbia, he explores practices and cultures and then weaves in the experimental repertoire he asks for or proposes universes of a rare and singular eclecticism. While in the background his appetite for electronic music pushes him to program game interfaces that he integrates into his setups, he shares his discoveries between interpretation and creation, receives, offers and transforms. Alongside the composers, he offers new game modes from his practices, new sounds gleaned while traveling, new colors from his research. He had the chance to create works by Samuel Andreyev, ErikM, Wolfgang Mitterer, Alireza Farhang, Maurilio Cacciatore, Sanae Ishida, Malika Kishino, Gualtiero Dazzi, Alejandro Vinao, Lara Morciano, Aurélien Dumont, Raphael Cendo, Francesco Filidei, Bryan Ferneyhough, Arturo Kampela, Kenji Sakai, Januibe Tejera (…) and to work with Yoshihisa Posada Taïra, Helmut Lachenman, Peter Eotvos, Alberto, Kaija Saariaho, Clara Ianotta (…) In 2010, he founded with Ayako Okubo the HANATSUmiroir ensemble and has since provided artistic direction and percussion with him. Since 2013, he has been taking the electro-rock-onerique duo Ork with drummer Samuel Klein. He regularly plays with the Linea ensemble and with the Percussions de Strasbourg, and is a member of the Dreieck Interférences: cooperative of sound ideas. His various formations have brought him to several countries in Europe, North America and Asia, to many halls, seasons and festivals: a range of contexts as wide as that of the music he defends.
