William Hancox

William was a Scholar at St. John’s College Cambridge, then won a scholarship to Trinity College of Music to study with the Hungarian pianist Joseph Weingarten, himself a student of Dohnányi, Bartók and Kodály. He has performed in major venues for over 40 years as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist throughout the UK and internationally, broadcast for Classic FM and the BBC and made a number of recordings. He has held staff pianist positions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity College of Music and the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh.

He has performed throughout Europe, with concerts in Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Iceland. He has also made several trips to China, performing in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing under the baton of Nicholas Michael Smith and giving masterclasses, song recitals and a solo recital.

William has a lifelong interest in the repertoire for voice and piano and has performed hundreds of song recitals. His approach was greatly influenced by studying with the famous accompanist Martin Isepp, formerly Head of Music at Glyndebourne Opera House. He has also worked extensively as a vocal coach, both at home and abroad, with many students now pursuing successful singing careers.

Based in the UK, William has become increasingly involved in projects which contribute to live music making in his own community in East Sussex. For many years he was pianist and artistic director of the chamber music series Music at Lime.  His most recent project is an innovative scheme called Music Box Wealden, which brings quality classical music into his local area.

Recent activities include recordings of English song with soprano Lorna Windsor and recitals with distinguished mezzo-soprano Louise Winter.  More musical projects with composer Nicholas Michael Smith are planned in the coming years.
