Music of 9/11

Made after visits to all the crash sites of September 11, 2001 and in collaboration with senior officials of the 9/11 Commission, this CD is a musical document of the events and emotions of that day, remarkably unsentimental but deeply moving. Requiem 77 is a solo cello work interlaced with the voices of air traffic controllers documenting the loss of flight 77 into the Pentagon; Eighteen Minutes documents the interval between the two WTC attacks and Angels and Fireflies is a hauntingly beautiful piece inspired by seeing clouds of fireflies hovering over the Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania. Issued in memory for all those afflicted, on that day and since.

These are not some vainglorious, grandiose showy scores, but instead ut­terly personal, introverted creations. His sincerity is always apparent. Sound is full and well balanced in keeping with the urgency of the writing, and Malone’s notes are illuminating, although it may be best to allow the music to make its own effect before reading about his methods and processes. There is something obsessive and exacting about his highly structured attempts to confront 9/11. It is not an easy listen … but I really admire Malone’s intricate style and invention.
