‘American Ethos’ is a thoroughly rewarding album of piano music by American composers, including Bernstein (Anniversaries), Copland (music from Our Town), William Grant Still (four of his Seven Traceries), Florence Price, Margaret Ruthven Lang, Ned Rorem, JJ Hollingsworth, Craig Urquhart, John Corigliano and Daron Hagen. Carolyn Enger has assembled a fine programme and plays it with real devotion. Many pieces were new to me here, not least William Grant Still’s Traceries, which I found particularly haunting. In Bernstein’s Anniversaries, Enger captures the individual characters, and it was an excellent idea to include pieces by Corigliano and Urquhart that were written for Bernstein. Florence Price’s Adoration makes a tender and effective closing item (Métier MEX77140).
