The American composer George Rochberg notoriously rejected serialism in the Sixties but flirted with modernism in his sonata of 1988, conveying intense feeling if not always originality. The Variations are another matter: nearly 90 minutes of intricate solo violin work that dips into the styles of all eras and many composers, always with purpose and impact.
